GOP candidate Donald Trump arrives for a campaign rally in Jackson, Miss., Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016. President Trump returns to the state Sept. 14 to campaign for Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith.

President Donald Trump has re-scheduled his trip to Mississippi.

He is scheduled to hold a rally at at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Landers Center in Southaven.

“I am honored that the president was able to reschedule his visit to Mississippi to show his support for our state and to campaign on my behalf,” Sen. Hyde-Smith said. “It has been a privilege to back his ‘America First’ agenda, and I look forward to welcoming him to DeSoto County.”

Trump was scheduled to appear earlier this month in Jackson, but that rally was canceled because of concerns about Hurricane Florence that hit the Carolinas about the same time the Jackson rally was scheduled.

The president is holding campaign rallies to support Republican candidates before the Nov. 6 general election. The Mississippi rally will be the first in a predominantly Republican state where incumbent Republican senators are on the ballot.

Thus far, he has campaigned for Republican challengers in predominately Republican or swing states, though, he said he will campaign for incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in Texas.

In Mississippi, both Republican Sens. Roger Wicker of Tupelo, and Hyde-Smith of Brookhaven will be on the ballot. Hyde-Smith, who was appointed to the Senate in April by Gov. Phil Bryant, is running in a special election to replace Thad Cochran who stepped down in March for health reasons.

A debate at Millsaps College in Jackson is slated for Thursday. The other candidates in the special election, Republican Chris McDaniel of Ellisville, and Democrats Mike Espy of Madsion County and Tobey Bartee of Gautier, have committed to participating in the debate. Thus far, Hyde-Smith has not, saying she may have conflicts because of commitments in Washington, D.C.

The day before the Southaven rally, Trump will be campaigning in Johnson City, Tenn.
